Ep. 25: Simon Russell Beale in Richard II

In this episode, we discuss the 2019 Almeida Theatre’s production of Richard II starring Simon Russell Beale, which was broadcast to cinemas worldwide via NTLive.

Joe Hill-Gibbons directed this streamlined 1 hour and 40 minutes (no interval) production of Richard II starring Simon Russell Beale.

The production is quite stripped down, taking place on a mostly bare stage with concrete walls and floor, and only the crown, some weapons, buckets, and gloves as props. This small cast also remains on stage throughout the entire run time, and everyone but Simon Russell Beale (as Richard) and Leo Bill (Bolingbroke) plays multiple roles.

Show notes

For more information on the production, including a list of cast and crew, visit the Almeida website here.

Previous Almeida productions that we have covered include: Ralph Fiennes in Richard III and Jonathan Pryce in King Lear. This is our first episode on Richard II.
